Russian pilot wins paragliding meet
The internationally known Russian pilot, Shorokhov Nikolay got the first position by getting 2038 points, Maslennikov Dmitry of Russia got second position by getting 1806 and third position was bagged by Ajay Sharma, India, who took 1566 points in the eight-day long (Oct 18 to Oct 25, 2006) Paragliding Himalayan Cup, 2006 which took place at Dir-Billing (near Baijnath) hi the Dhauladhar ranges of Kangra district of Hirnachal Pradesh.
In Indian ranking Ajay Sharma, Sanjay Pendurkar and Khem Raj got first, second and third position respectively Due to the bad weather conditions during the event, the competition was held only for four days of this eight-day long Paragliding event.
The state tourism and transport minister GS Bali was the chief guest on the concluding day of this event. He announced in his address to open a tourist information centre at this world famous place Bir-Billing to assist tourists. He also announced to provide an instructor and two Paragliders to promote the event among local youths. He added that this place is now on international map and stressed the need to develop the tourism industry He told that the state government is giving special attention to develop tourism and for this it had provided a budget of Rs 10 crore to Kangra and Rs 8 crore each to Mandi and Shimla districts respectively.
He presented the prizes and trophies to the various participants and winners. The overall winners Shorokhov Nikolay Maslennikov Dmitry of Russia got cash prizes Rs 10,000 and Rs 8,000 with trophies for first and second positions respectively and Ajay Sharma of India got Rs 6,000 and trophy for third position. In Indian ranking Ajay Shama, Sanjay Pendurkar and Khem Raj Thakur got Rs 8,000, 6,000, 4,000 and trophies for first, second and third positions, respectively.
